What to Expect During an End of Lease Pest Treatment

An end of lease pest treatment may be required when vacating a rental property, particularly where pets have been kept at the premises or where pest treatment forms part of the tenancy agreement or instructions provided by the property manager or landlord.

The treatment required can vary depending on the property and the reason for the service. Surekill Pest Control can treat relevant internal and external areas and provide a Certificate of Treatment once the service has been completed.

Before booking, check your tenancy agreement or confirm with your property manager or landlord what pest treatment is required. This helps ensure the correct service is booked for the property.

This guide explains how to prepare for your end of lease pest treatment, what access your technician will need, what happens during treatment and what to expect afterwards.

01

Booking Information

Booking and Treatment Time

End of lease pest treatments generally take approximately one hour, although treatment time can vary depending on the size of the property, the areas requiring treatment and the type of pest treatment being carried out.

Your scheduled booking time is an arrival window. For example, if your arrival window is between 10:00 am and 12:00 noon, your technician may arrive at any time during that period. Please allow additional time after the arrival window for the treatment to be completed.

Confirm the Treatment Required

Before booking, check your tenancy agreement or confirm with your property manager or landlord what pest treatment is required. Let Surekill know of any specific requirements when making your booking so the appropriate treatment can be arranged.

Property Access

You do not necessarily need to be present during the treatment. Where arranged beforehand, access may be provided using keys collected from the real estate agency or another agreed access method.

Weather Conditions

End of lease treatments may include external areas. Rain or windy conditions can affect some external applications, so Surekill may contact you if weather conditions could affect the safe or effective completion of the treatment.

Licensed and Insured Technicians

Surekill Pest Control is fully insured, and our pest management technicians are appropriately licensed and follow relevant EPA requirements and product label directions when carrying out end of lease pest treatments.

Payment Options

Payment can be made by EFT/bank transfer, cash, EFTPOS or credit card. Payment is required before treatment commences.

How to Prepare for an End of Lease Pest Treatment

Complete Cleaning First

Complete your end of lease cleaning before the pest treatment. Vacuum carpets, rugs and hard floor surfaces thoroughly, paying particular attention to edges, corners and areas where pets have rested or spent time.

Remove Personal Belongings

Where possible, the property should be empty of personal belongings before treatment. This provides better access to floors, edges and other areas that may require treatment.

Remove Pets

All pets should be removed from the property before treatment begins. Remove pet bedding, food and water bowls and other pet items from areas being treated.

Prepare Lawns and Garden Areas

Cut long grass before the treatment and clear unnecessary items from lawns and garden areas that require access.

Water Lawns and Garden Beds

Where external flea treatment is required, thoroughly water grass and garden beds before the technician arrives. The ground should be moist rather than excessively waterlogged.

Keep Treatment Areas Accessible

Ensure the technician has clear access to all areas requiring treatment, including internal rooms, external areas and the subfloor where applicable.

03

Before Treatment

Property Access

Make sure your technician can access all areas requiring treatment. If you will not be at the property, confirm the access arrangements with Surekill before the appointment, including key collection from the real estate agency where arranged.

Water Tank Location

Tell your technician if the property has a rainwater tank and where it is located. This allows appropriate precautions to be taken when treating external areas.

Subfloor Access

If the property has an accessible subfloor that requires treatment, ensure the access point is clear and can be safely reached by the technician.

Pets

Make sure all pets have been removed from the property and treatment areas before the technician arrives.

Air Conditioning

Turn off air-conditioning and ventilation systems before treatment where requested by your technician.

Chemical Sensitivities

Tell Surekill before treatment if anyone associated with the property has a known chemical sensitivity. People with chemical sensitivities should remain away from treated areas for 24 hours, or until the treatment has completely dried and the area has been adequately ventilated, whichever is longer.

Final Check

Before treatment begins, your technician will confirm the areas requiring treatment and check that they can be safely accessed. If the property manager or landlord has provided specific end-of-lease pest-control requirements, make sure these have been communicated to Surekill.

End of Lease Process

Confirm the Treatment Requirements

Before treatment begins, your technician will confirm the areas requiring treatment and any specific requirements that have been provided by you, the property manager or landlord.

Property Inspection

Your technician will assess the areas being treated and consider conditions that may affect the treatment. This helps determine the appropriate products and application methods for the property.

Internal Treatment

Where required, treatment may be applied to suitable internal areas including carpets, rugs, hard floors, edges and other locations relevant to the pest being treated.

External Treatment

Where external treatment is required, appropriate areas may include lawns, garden areas, patios, verandas and other locations around the property. The areas treated will depend on the pest being targeted and the conditions at the property.

Flea Treatment

Where the end of lease service includes flea treatment, an appropriate insecticide treatment may be used together with an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR). The IGR helps disrupt the flea life cycle and forms part of the overall flea management treatment.

Subfloor Treatment

Where the property has an accessible subfloor and treatment is required, an appropriate treatment may also be applied to this area.

Treatment According to the Property

Not every end of lease treatment requires exactly the same applications. Your technician will select the appropriate treatment methods according to the pest being targeted, the areas requiring treatment and the conditions found at the property.

05

After Your End of Lease Pest Treatment

Re-Entry After Treatment

Keep people and pets away from treated areas while treatment is being carried out and until the products have completely dried. Follow any additional re-entry instructions provided by your technician.

Allow Treated Areas to Dry

Avoid contact with treated surfaces while they are wet. Drying time can vary depending on the treatment, weather conditions and areas treated, so follow the instructions provided by your technician.

Avoid Cleaning Treated Areas

Avoid immediately washing, vacuuming or cleaning treated surfaces where this could remove the treatment. Your technician will advise when normal cleaning can resume and which areas should be left undisturbed.

Flea Activity After Treatment

Where flea treatment has been carried out, some flea activity may still be noticed after the service. Fleas can continue to emerge from immature stages already present in the environment, so activity does not necessarily mean the treatment has been unsuccessful.

Certificate of Treatment

Once the service has been completed, Surekill will provide a Certificate of Treatment as documentation that the end of lease pest treatment has been carried out. This can be provided to your property manager or landlord where required.

Questions After Treatment

If your property manager or landlord has questions about the pest treatment or documentation provided, contact Surekill Pest Control so we can assist with the treatment information.

After Moving Out

Provide the Certificate of Treatment

Keep your Certificate of Treatment with your end of lease records and provide a copy to your property manager or landlord where required.

Keep Your Treatment Records

Retain the treatment documentation in case confirmation of the service is requested during the finalisation of your tenancy.

Check for Any Further Requirements

If your property manager or landlord advises that additional pest-control work or documentation is required, contact Surekill Pest Control and let us know what has been requested.

Pest Prevention at Your Next Property

If you have pets, continue regular flea prevention as recommended by your veterinarian. Keeping pet bedding clean, vacuuming regularly and monitoring for pest activity can also help reduce the risk of transferring fleas or other pests to your new property.

Check Items During the Move

Inspect pet bedding, boxes and stored belongings as you unpack. This can help identify pest activity that may have been transported with belongings during the move.
